Lons le Saunier

Not a huge amount to report today as I spent much of it looking at maps and trying to figure which way up they go. I’m planning the next few days into Geneva. I head off tomorrow morning and head to Clairvaux les Lacs which looks beautiful in the pics online.

Lons le Saunier has been nice for me the Nouvel hotel even bought soya milk. The tourist information lass was fantastically helpful and has made the next few days a lit easier.

Now, here’s a thing – Rouget de Lisle was from Lons le Saunier. Yes indeed, I was also impressed. Young Rouget composed le Marseillaise (the French national anthem for my less knowledgeable friends). I have to admit that I have always liked the French anthem. It is a very stirring piece of music. The French also seem to know the words and don’t just sing the first bit twice like the British!

For those who don’t know:

The words of the National Anthem are as follows:

God save our gracious Queen!
Long live our noble Queen!
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the Queen.

Thy choicest gifts in store
On her be pleased to pour,
Long may she reign.
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause,
To sing with heart and voice,
God save the Queen.

I digress!

I don’t even understand the second bit of that. Be pleased to pour choice gifts on her – you can get locked up for that kind of thing surely.

I need to sleep .
