Day 36
79 miles flat, hot lots of corn.
A long day that adds up to >150 miles in two days, we are planning on another 60 miles tomorrow then a rest day.
We started the ride about 0715 and made good progress averaging about 12 mph. The day was once again grey and overcast but there was no significant headwind.
We met a few cyclists but all were heading west, we chatted for a while to each group before we carried on.
Soon we passed the first of a couple of dreadful hell holes. Stinking enclosures packed with miserable cows covered in their own excrement. The stench was overpowering and the dismal life these poor creatures endure is a disgrace to all who are part of this system. The sign said ‘Prime Beef’.
We passed through small towns such as Scott City where we spoke with some nice people in a diner. We talked about Brexit, the US election, sunflower seeds and cycling.
We passed fields full of corn as well as grain elevators like the big one in the second picture. There are many of these scattered through the Kansas landscape.
Finally we made it to Ness City and into our nice budget Motel. I think we will sleep like logs tonight. First though we visited a very nice Mexican restaurant and enjoyed some lovely food.
A good day, tiring but again we hit our target. The only downside was the shameful sight of animals being abused by a system that treats living creatures as a commodity. People need to ask more questions.
